Introduction
Brief History

  • General Study of National Taitung Teachers Training College established language group in 1967.
  • The school was changed to a teachers college and set up Department of Languages and Literature Education in 1987.
  • Transforming the Languages and Literature Education Department, the Humanities established the Department of Chinese Language and Literature in 2006.
  • The master’s degree program of Chinese Language and Literature Department was designed in 2011, and enrolled 11 graduate students.

Objectives

  • Cultivate Chinese talents in accordance with government policies to spread Chinese language internationally.
  • Implement and apply language education to increase students’ reading and writing abilities.
  • Participate the study of local Chinese literature in East Taiwan and multi-ethnic culture.

Future Development

Multicultural: emphasize integration of cross-departmental knowledge. The specific objectives are as follows:
1. Cooperate with the Graduate Institute of Children’s Literature to develop children’s Chinese textbooks for use in foreign countries.
2. Cooperate with the Department of English to cultivate bilingual Chinese teachers.
3. Provide support for native language teachers training.

Globalization: The 21st century is the Chinese age. Chinese will become the second lingua franca; the department plans to use the following methods to push for globalization:
1. Support the “Language Center” and cooperate with the Department of English in spreading Mandarin Chinese into other countries.
2.Develop exchange programs for students and professors from foreign universities.
3. Cooperate with local and foreign institutes of learning to enhance information exchanges.

Localization: The environment in which one lives and depends on is the starting point of all literature, in order to return to the land to grow, the department will integrate government agencies, civil groups and local historians, to gradually establish localization, and distinguished humanities academic centers. The specific objectives are as follows:   
1. Establish and preserve of a database for valuable local Taitung historical culture.   
2. Publish books on Eastern Taiwan culture.   
3. Work with the Division of Extension and Continuing Education to provide opportunities for further education and learning to foreigners in the Taitung area.
